A delightful and unexpected encounter in our local post office cum corner shop a few days ago with a lady clad pretty much head to foot in Camp Beagle clothing. I expressed my whole-hearted approval and we went on to have a lively discussion of our shared interest in animal welfare. We had both very recently read the book I reviewed here:
Your Neighbour Kills Puppies; Inside the Animal Liberation Movement – Animal Wild
I had only just about heard of Camp Beagle but perhaps it is a sign of the hope expressed in the final lines of the book: “… a new era is dawning. The grassroots anti-vivisection movement is poised for a resurgence and is determined to finish off what its predecessors started.”
Camp Beagle, a protest camp, was founded in 2021 and has a been a constant and growing presence ever since outside the premises of the American company Marshall BioResources, operating as MBR Acres Ltd, just outside Huntington in Cambridgeshire. It is nothing short of a puppy factory, breeding dogs in terrible conditions on an industrial scale for, primarily, unimaginably cruel toxicology tests carried out by the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. I will never tire of saying that these experiments are utterly pointless.
