Magpies attack

A great story from BBOWT volunteers whom I met on the Restore Nature Now march. They came downstairs one morning and opened their log burner to find a fledgling Magpie inside, which had somehow fallen into it. The Magpie seemed unharmed so they carefully took him outside and placed him on the ground in their garden in the hope that the parents would turn up and do what they needed to do. They had hardly taken a step back to watch and make sure that all would be well when the parents arrived. Assuming these naked apes were the source of the problem, the predators, they launched into attack mode. The incredible thing is, so did all the other magpies in the surrounding area, like a scene from Hitchcock’s The Birds. Combined, collective fury, protective instincts and altruism. What an amazing thing.
