Protect the Wild

This post is just a brief message of congratulations to this wonderful organisation which has now existed for a decade. Founder Rob Pownall has written a book giving a short history: Protect the Wild, a Decade Fighting for Wildlife, available from the website and benefitting the charity. I have supported them since their early tentative days as Keep The Ban. Expanding from challenging fox hunting alone, the name change happened in 2022. They have been tireless in their many campaigns and exposés of which I have written a good deal on this blog. There could hardly be more worthwhile causes. Rob has been incredibly brave from the outset to put his head above the parapet: he is mostly going after the rich, powerful and often violent.

Protect the Wild have done far too much to begin to summarise here, but here is Rob’s penultimate paragraph from the book: “I promise I’ll give everything I have to grow this movement, to push harder, to do more. I won’t rest until all British wildlife is safe and free from cruelty. And together, we’ll use every legal means available to make that happen.”

Progress has inevitably been slow because people who care are up against vested interests of great power but there has been progress. Public tolerance of these anachronistic and sadistic practices is waning, hunts continue to fold and merge.

We are up against people who actually hate wildlife or enjoy cruelly killing and torturing wildlife, or both. We and in the long term our children and grandchildren all are forever in Rob’s debt. And he will not rest.
