I stayed overnight at Moor Hall in Cookham, where I used to live, home of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and conference centre. A strange venue for me but it suited the purposes of a friend and me who were attending the slightly odd occasion of a combined birthday party and wake. After breakfast I happened to come across this quotation by Grace Hopper, the American computer science pioneer, mathematician and United States Navy Rear Admiral: “The most dangerous phrase in the language is ‘we’ve always done it this way’ ”. It strikes a lot of chords for me. There are many traditions of which I am fond, but tradition alone is a terrible reason for continuing to do things in a certain way, an argument I have most often used in criticism of the farming industry.
